The Basenji

Our breeding purpose is to be bred healthy Basenjis of the original type which are optimally suited as family dogs. Exhibition results are important to us, however, the focus of our breeding lies unambiguously on character and health.

With the Basenji it is no a matter of improvement of the race but of keeping them as healthy and agil as they were for over 2000 years.

The Basenji is a dog, however, not like every other. He has many characteristics that are unusal, e.g., he cannot bark but is not mute. He is able to utter many different sounds, like what we call jodeling. He lacks the typical dog smell and his behaviour is simply different. Many people circumscribe him with "cat-dog". This applies in many areas. He washes and cleans himself often and hates dirt and rain.
Basenjis love warm, sunny moorings and prefer to avoid water and rain, although some swim with much pleasure. Some Basenjis are excellent climbers and fantastic escape artists. They have an exceedingly high intelligence which they do not so much offer for the use of their owners, than to use it for a lot of nonsense and practical joke. In the heart they resemble a toddler, they want to play all day and are of full of life.

Obedience has to be part of the education, but it must not dominate the everyday life. It is rather to show the Basenji who is the pack leader and that the dog is not always allowed to do everything he would want. Brutality or unreserved subordination do not correspond to the being of a Basenji.
Who desires a well-behaved dog under all circumstances, will never become happy with a Basenji and should decide for another breed! It is also to be considered that a Basenji can become 14-17 years old, thanks to the above-average race health, often staying very agil till old age.

If you are interested in a Basenji I can only recommended to see this breed live. A possibility exists on international exhibitions of the VDH, however, much better is the visite of a breeder and his Basenjis at home. You will know immediately whether the Basenji is the dog you are looking for, or not. Ordinarily it is love at first sight.

You are warmly invited for a visit ... just email or  call !

Our puppies are raised and living in the whole house, with very close family contact and in company of our six grown Basenjis Amber, Aragorn, Troy, Casia, Demian and Skadi. There have access to our yard and garden. If the weather permits it we take them to the fields or the city to experience other people, dogs and new surroundings.
I study law in Würzburg and, hence, i am able to organise my time freely enough to be with the puppies all day, when they are still little. Through small excursions in the presence of their mother and siblings, the puppies get used to driving in a car.

Thus I hope to prepare the puppies optimally for their new families. I own Basenjis for nearly ten years now and educate myself regularly at breeder seminars, by literature and many, many conversations with befriended breeders who own Basenjis and other breeds for several decades.

Our puppies are very dear to us.

My demands on the future puppies' owners:

  • The puppy is not a subject of dealing and thus we require personal contact and personal purchase. (The first visit to the puppies is possible on the 20th day, the purchase after eight weeks.)
  • I require appropriate conditions for keeping the dog. I will not sell the puppy into the cote, kennel, or in the garden... I believe that every dog, especially Basenjis, needs the contact with people and his family.
  • The puppy's owner must be able to provide proper care for the puppy, give him enough love and socialize him properly (¨contact with other dogs and people).
  • The future owner of the puppy must know why he or she has chosen Basenjis and at the moment of the purchase, he or she must have basic knowledge of the breed, its character, particularities and method of training. (I am ready to answer all your questions.)
  • I want to keep in touch with all the puppies' owners and I expect them to let me know about exhibition prizes as well as breeding outcomes and also everyday delight and troubles. I appreciate if the owners let me know in case of any health or training problems. I shall be very pleased to help them.
